What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye's natural lens. As the lens loses transparency, light cannot be focused properly on the retina and vision gradually becomes blurred. Common symptoms include foggy vision, difficulty driving at night, sensitivity to light, faded colors and fatigue when reading. Cataracts usually develop with age, but diabetes, trauma, long-term steroid use and some eye diseases can speed up the process.

How Is Modern Cataract Surgery Performed?

The most common technique today is phacoemulsification. Through a small incision, the cloudy lens is broken up with ultrasound energy and removed, then a foldable artificial lens is inserted. The procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes and is often performed with drop anesthesia. Because the incision is small, sutures are usually unnecessary and recovery is fast.

Which Lens Should You Choose?

Monofocal lenses focus at one distance, usually far vision, so reading glasses may still be needed. Multifocal lenses aim to support both near and distance vision. Trifocal lenses can provide a more balanced view at near, intermediate and far distances. The best lens depends on the patient's profession, expectations, night driving habits and eye anatomy.

Recovery and Results

Most patients notice clearer vision the next day. Mild stinging, tearing or light sensitivity can occur in the first week. Regular use of prescribed drops is important. Full recovery usually completes within a few weeks, and if a second eye is planned, it is often done after the first eye's recovery has been observed.

Why Early Intervention Matters

As cataracts progress, quality of life drops, fall risk increases, and functional independence decreases. Earlier treatment can mean a smoother operation and faster rehabilitation. That is why blurred vision should not be ignored.

Cataract Cost in Turkey

In Turkey, the cost of cataract surgery and lens choice varies depending on the implant type. Compared with Europe, the price is often more accessible, but the most important issue is the surgical technology and the lens recommendation. In eye care, choosing the right center matters as much as the price.
