What Is a Smart Lens?

A smart lens is an advanced eye surgery procedure in which the natural lens is removed and replaced with a foldable artificial lens. It is most often used for cataract treatment, but in selected patients it can also help reduce dependence on glasses. With trifocal, EDOF and toric options, the goal is better vision at far, intermediate and near distances.

Who Is It For?

Patients who want more comfortable vision for distance, reading and computer work, those with cataracts, patients whose corneas are not suitable for laser surgery, and individuals with astigmatism may be candidates. However, not everyone is a good fit. If there is an additional problem in the retina, cornea or macula, the decision must be made very carefully.

Trifocal vs EDOF

Trifocal lenses work with three focus points to provide clear vision at far, intermediate and near distances. EDOF lenses increase depth of focus and can offer a more natural transition, especially at intermediate range. Night halos and glare can vary from patient to patient, so expectation management is essential.

Procedure

The surgery usually takes 15-20 minutes and can be performed under local or drop anesthesia. The technique resembles cataract surgery: the natural lens is removed and a foldable lens is implanted. Same-day discharge is possible. Vision usually improves within days, but full stability may take a few weeks.

Advantages and Limitations

The biggest benefit is a significant reduction in the need for glasses. However, side effects such as night glare, halos and changes in contrast sensitivity may occur. Therefore, the decision should be based on lifestyle and professional needs.

Smart Lens Cost in Turkey

In Turkey, premium trifocal lens procedures are often more affordable than in Europe, though the exact price depends on the lens type and the clinic. The most important points are not only the cost, but also the lens brand, the surgeon's experience and the follow-up system.
